External Manual Handle Mount for Motorized Automatic Transfer Switch

Manufacturer: IEM marine ATS assembly

Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) transfer electrical loads between primary and emergency power sources during loss of power.

This system includes a loose manual override handle allowing operators to manually actuate the switch when automatic operation is unavailable

Problem
The supplied manual handle has no dedicated storage location on the enclosure. As a result, the handle is often stored inside the cabinet or elsewhere in the nearby.

This creates two issues:
Emergency access
Manual operation may require opening the enclosure during a power failure.
Automatic function disablement
When the handle is inserted into the mechanism, the ATS automatic transfer function is disabled. If left inserted, the system may not automatically transfer during a future outage.

Engineered Solution
A custom external handle mount was installed on the front of the ATS enclosure.
The mount stores the handle in a visible and accessible location while keeping it outside the operating mechanism, allowing the switch to remain in automatic mode.
A warning label was incorporated into the mount:
“Using handle will disable automatic function.”
Benefits
• Immediate access to the manual handle
• No need to open the enclosure during emergency operation
• Prevents the handle from being left in the mechanism
• Clear operator awareness of manual override effects
The modification requires no electrical changes and installs using simple external mounting.

Design Insight
This modification highlights a common issue in electrical equipment design: operator usability during emergency conditions.

Manual override tools are critical components of a system. If they are not clearly stored and accessible, the system may effectively become unusable when manual intervention is required.
Providing a dedicated storage location ensures the handle is: Visible, Accessible, and Not accidentally left disabling automatic operation

Engineering Record
This document records a field-developed improvement to increase accessibility and operational clarity for motorized automatic transfer switches used in marine electrical systems.
The concept may be applicable to other ATS installations where manual override handles lack dedicated external storage.
